Understanding hemp

Plain answers — and an honest note about where the plain answers run out.

What THCA is

THCA, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the acidic compound found in raw, living cannabis. It is not delta-9 THC. When THCA is heated it loses a carboxyl group and converts into delta-9 THC; chemists call this decarboxylation. That conversion is the reason raw and heated cannabis behave differently.

What the 2018 Farm Bill says

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis, and removed hemp so defined from the federal Controlled Substances Act. That definition is written around delta-9 specifically.

Where it gets complicated

This is the part most shops leave out. Because the federal definition measures delta-9, and because THCA converts to delta-9 when heated, there is a real and unresolved argument about how THCA-rich material should be measured. A number of states have answered it themselves — some by measuring total THC rather than delta-9 alone, some by restricting or prohibiting THCA products outright, some by setting their own rules for what may be sold and to whom.

What our labels do and do not tell you

Every listing states the product's weight, its strain and its price before anything reaches your bag. Strain names and percentages are the figures supplied to us.

We do not publish certificates of analysis on this site, and we will not describe testing we cannot show you. If you want to know what documentation exists for a particular item, write to us and we will tell you plainly what we do and do not have.

What we will never tell you

We will not tell you that hemp treats, cures or relieves anything. We are a shop, not a clinic, and nobody selling these products is qualified to make that claim. If you are considering hemp for a health reason, that is a conversation for a doctor.
